After washing and conditioning my hair today I applied my homemade conditioning balm, followed by a homemade moisturising lotion and then the buttercreme that I used yesterday. I applied Aunt Jackie's Don't Shrink Gel on top of the products but I didn't shingle or rake the product through (because I didn't want to spend too much time styling my hair). There was some frizz in places but that might be because I was touching my hair before it dried. I'm happy with the coil definition but my hair felt softer yesterday when the buttercreme was on top of the gel. The gel is slightly drying so I will need to experiment with different product combinations.
Prior to shaving off my hair I rarely rarely applied styling products to define the length of my hair. I would define the tips of my mini twists and mini braids (as in the above picture) because it was a lot easier to get coil definition when my hair was in these styles. When I wet my braided hair the tips automatically coil so the styling products enhance the coil pattern that is already there. When I wet my loose natural hair the coils shrink up and go all over the place making it difficult to get definition. I was able to get good coil definition when I applied styling product to my pre-stretched dry hair but I rarely did this because I preferred mini twists.
The above picture was taken in July 2014 while I was on vacation in Dubai. My hair was in mini twists which had shrunken up after I went swimming. When I wet my twists I was able to get coil definition at the ends with less overall shrinkage than a Wash N Go so twists were a better style option for my longer hair. Now that my hair is short I'm not worried about tangles so I'm not trying to avoid shrinkage.
